Meet Our music director,
zachary friberg
I am honored to serve our Aberdeen Baptist Church family through Music Ministry.
My wife, Erin, and I began attending Aberdeen together while dating in the spring of 2019, and became members of this church family that summer during our engagement. We were married here in November of 2019. What a privilege it is to raise our children among a church family so committed to exemplifying the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)!
Our Story
I am the firstborn of a family of six (five boys and one more-than-able-to-hold-her-own sister), while Erin enjoyed the much less chaotic childhood of only having one younger brother. We have both called Pueblo home off and on since 2001. As a student, I pursued my musical training at Colorado State University-Pueblo, graduating with my degree in Music Performance. Since 2011, I have worked as Music Director for the Pueblo Children’s Chorale, while Erin has served our community as a Hospice Nurse for nearly ten years.
We both were raised in a church-attending, Christian homes. Erin’s grandfather was a Colorado Baptist minister, and my parents - both the children of overseas missionaries - kept my siblings and I active in our Biblical training through participation in the AWANA program. As is so true for many, though, a heritage of faith does not automatically grant faith. I struggled in my teenage years and through my 20’s to truly understand how to live out my faith beyond the head knowledge and surface-level “do’s & don’ts” that provide such uncertain footing in the storms of life. Knowing and believing are two entirely different things.
For myself, it was not until the course of my life to that point shipwrecked into divorce in 2018 that I truly began to realize what it means to surrender and believe that Christ is my “Sure and Steady Anchor in the fury of the storm”. For Erin, it was the experience of being a divorced, single mother working through nursing school that brought her back to the “Streams of mercy, never ceasing”. The church family we found here at Aberdeen was used greatly by God to bring additional healing and growth to our walks of faith so that we can proclaim together “Whatever our lot, He has taught us to say, It is well, it is well with my soul”.
Congregational Worship
Since stepping into the role of Director of Music Ministry in 2023, it has been my joy to lead our church family in singing and proclaiming the Goodness of God on a weekly basis. It is my conviction that the hymns and songs we sing in our worship service should build up and inspire us with wonder at the Character and Majesty of God Almighty, and the incredible work of His Son, our Savior Jesus. To that end, during our time of worship together through song here at Aberdeen Baptist Church, we sing hymns drawn from both the Baptist Hymnal (2008) and the new Sing! Hymnal from Crossway. We lift our voices together through congregational singing that results in the congregation taking on the role of choir as we join the song of the ages to offer praise to God Most High and to the Lamb Who Alone Is Worthy. It is our desire that “whatever [we] do, in word or deed, [we] do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus - giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17)
For myself, for Erin, and for our six growing children, Aberdeen Baptist Church has been a blessed haven to experience the Restoring Love of Jesus.
Favorite Scripture Passage:
1 Timothy 1:15-17 (ESV)
"The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen."
